Shoulder Pain Treatment
in Chippewa Falls
Reaching for a cabinet, brushing your hair, or rolling onto your side at night can suddenly turn into a painful ordeal. Shoulder pain shows up in the middle of ordinary movements and makes them impossible to ignore. Chippewa Falls Chiropractor Dr. Jason Denn sees patients with shoulder pain caused by everything from overuse injuries to falls and repetitive strain.
Why One Small Joint Causes So Much Trouble
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint held together by roughly two dozen muscles working in constant coordination. Without them, your arm would simply hang at your side. That complexity is exactly why shoulder pain can be hard to pin down. A minor strain usually brings discomfort with certain movements, while a more significant injury limits how far you can actually lift your arm.

The Rise in Overuse Injuries From Getting Back Into Activity
Most shoulder pain does not come from one dramatic moment. It builds gradually as people jump back into activity without the strength or warm up to support it. Common causes of shoulder pain include:
- Picking up a new or more demanding sport without easing in
- Skipping a real warm up before repetitive arm motion
- Sleeping on your stomach, which twists the shoulder for hours at a stretch
- Yard work or projects involving repeated overhead reaching
- Falls or direct impact that jam the joint into the socket
- Old injuries that were never fully rehabilitated
Telling a Minor Strain From Something More Serious
A minor strain tends to bring pain during specific movements, but you can usually still move through a full range of motion. A more serious injury feels different. Numbness or tingling running into your hand, visible bruising or swelling, or an inability to lift your hand to your mouth are signs that more than a simple strain is going on, and waiting rarely makes them resolve on their own.
Finding the Real Source Before Treating the Symptom
Care at our practice starts with understanding exactly how the injury happened and testing the shoulder through that same motion, along with the opposite one, since muscles guarding against the original injury are often the ones locked in spasm. Because so many muscle groups can be involved beyond the rotator cuff, pinpointing the true source sometimes takes more digging than expected.
One patient had been told her ongoing numbness was simply arthritis. A closer look found a rotated first rib compressing a nerve every time she moved a certain way. Soft tissue work on the surrounding muscles and a rib adjustment resolved the numbness within five or six visits, including the version that used to flare up brushing her teeth.
Getting Back to the Motions You Stopped Noticing
Recovery looks different depending on whether the shoulder needs alignment work, soft tissue treatment, or a stretching program built around your specific activity. Patients who stick with a home program built for their own movement patterns, whether that’s a pickleball swing or a kayak stroke, tend to see the steadiest results.
